Eric Ayiah the former Ghana UE17 promising young player has been consigned to Monaco’s junior team since late last year. Now his patience finally paid off as he got promoted to the AS Monaco’s first-team squad in yesterday’s Ligue 1 match against Reims FC.

Monaco lost to Reims 2-1, but the experience of finally sitting on the bench of a top flight club is a dream come true for Eric Ayiah. The 22-year old centre striker from Ghana has been well scouted as a top prospect to make it to the pros. One football scout said that his stellar play in the UEFA Youth League clearly showed his football gifts, and it seemed like he was a man playing amongst boys.

Eric Ayiah was nominated as the CAF Youth Player of the Year back in 207 but was omitted from the final shortlist. He was the team captain for Ghana’s National Under-17 football team until he was recruited by Monaco to play for their Under-19 team and eventually for their junior team. He also had a brief stint with the Black Starlets in India. He was too big of a prospect that Monaco FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers were his loudest suitors until Eric Ayiah chose the former. Now, the boy finally had his first taste of professional soccer play.

AS Monaco FC’s team manager Philippe Clement said his decision to promote Eric Ayiah for yesterday’s game was mainly because of his performances when playing against the first team squad. His grit and determination to make it to the big stage is very obvious given his impressive play instead of succumbing to pressure for playing with the big boys. In 17 games with AS Monaco’s junior team, Eric Ayiah has scored two goals and assisted on five.

The future is still uncertain for Eric Ayiah but for sure the kid is trending in the right direction. It is still not confirmed whether his inclusion in Monaco’s first team is a permanent one or it is an interim basis given the injuries of other Monaco players. As long as the kid from Ghana remains focused on his hard work and training, the future’s so bright for this football prodigy.
