Pirates Advance to the Next Round

Orlando Pirates FC defeated AmaZulu FC 1-0 yesterday to advance in the next round of the 2022 Nedbank Cup.

A one-two play by Deon Hotto and Thabang Monare allowed the former to smoothly kick the ball and hit the back of the net. Hotto’s goal at minute 52 would go on as the lone goal of the game to give the Pirates the victory.

AmaZulu FC had a chance to tie the game with two minutes remaining in the contest, but Usuthu defender Tapelo Xoki was well defended by goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane, unable to convert on the penalty kick.

Breaks of the Game Saved the Buccaneers

The game had a slow pace as both teams struggled to get into position and complete an offensive attack. Possessions went back and forth, but the defences were all in place wherein there were no scoring opportunities from both ball clubs.

By the 12th minute, Orlando Pirates had a chance to score their first goal, but midfielder Ntsako Mabusela could not take advantage of a well-placed assist from Goodman Mosele. Unfortunately, Mabusela’s goal attempt lacked power and Usuthu’s goalkeeper Veli Mothwa quickly thwarted the shot.

AmaZulu had a chance at a penalty kick when Mosele caught the ball inside the boundary line, but the referee waved the penalty and let the players go on playing. Usuthu complained against the referee’s decision to no avail.

At the start of the 2nd half, AmaZulu’s Augustine Mulenga and Luvuyo Memela combined for a nice shot outside the box, but Memela’s kick was off the target. The game went back and forth until the 52nd minute when Monare set up Hotto for the game’s lone goal. There were a lot of developments after Hotto’s goal as the pressure on AmaZulu’s side was pretty clear as time was counting down. Tapelo Xoki missed a penalty shot with two minutes remaining, and the Orlando Pirates held on for the victory.

The Buccaneers are eyeing a deep run at the 2022 Nedbank Cup after escaping a tight initial round. The Pirates will face JS Saoura in the next round on 13 February at the Orlando Stadium.
