USWNT Beats New Zealand, NZ Player Scores on Own Goal

The US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) continues its championship bid in this year’s SheBelieves Cup by winning over New Zealand in a dominating fashion. The US women’s soccer team was able to score 2 goals in the match while NZ could not manage to go through the Americans’ swarming defense. The New Zealand team finished the game without any goals.

The highlight of the game was New Zealand’s Meikayla Moore whose hat trick backfired when she accidentally scored it on her own goal. News of this play easily circulated on the internet and has now become viral. New Zealand had three own goals to contribute to the US’ dominant finish.

A cross pass by US’ Sophia Smith was deflected by Moore’s leg to give the Americans its first lead of the game at the 5-minute mark. A minute later, another pass by US’ Sofia Huerta bounced off Moore’s head leading to the 2nd own goal of the match. The worst play came in the 36th minute when Moore could not clear a pass and the ball went against her left leg for the third own goal play of the game. Moore was then subbed out at the 40th minute in clear disappointment. This game has to be the worst for the defender out of Liverpool.

Ashley Hatch and Mallory Pugh each scored goals in the 2nd half for the US team. This game was a big improvement for the Americans compared to their scoreless draw against the Czech Republic last Thursday night. This game showed US’ potent offensive attacks in combination to their swarming on-ball defensive tactics. Moore’s poor play were only additional points against the New Zealand team but it cannot discount USWNT’s great performance.

US team’s Alyssa Naeher was also terrific defensively in this game as she made a great save to keep the NZ team scoreless. It was his first match since she was forced to leave mid-game in the Olympic qualifiers due to a knee injury. Naeher was a late addition to the starting lineup after being cleared to play by the team doctors. Her return to the roster further adds depth and experience to this USWNT.
